Bio: Organizational psychologist @whartonschool #1 NYT bestselling author of THINK AGAIN and HIDDEN POTENTIAL @TED podcast: Re:Thinking
- Your favorite insights of 2023. Thanks to so many of you for engaging enthusiastically, challenging respectfully, and sharing thoughtfully!
- When you give tough love, how do you highlight that you’re doing it because you care? This event with @jennifer.garner was one of my favorites ever—filled with surprise and delight. Podcast link in bio: we talk parenting and mentoring, acting and aging, hidden potential, and what our dream school would look like
- I just visited my old diving team, and couldn’t resist getting back on the board for the first time in years. Back in the 90s, the hardest skill for me to learn was twisting, and I wanted to see if this old dog could still do an old trick. And yes, I’m still sore 😆
- The reports about the events at Cornell—and the lack of accountability for the perpetrators—are sickening. Also disgusting is the victim blaming in response. The right place to focus is not on teaching girls and women to avoid harm; it’s on raising boys and men who don’t commit it.
- For more on building and sustaining strong bonds, check out my new book VIBE—it comes out Oct 13! It’s available for preorder now, and I hope to see some of you live on my tour with Jennifer Garner, Malcolm Gladwell, M. Night Shyamalan, Brené Brown, Mark Rober, Malala, Daymond John, Ann Patchett, Matthew McConaughey and more! Swipe for details
- The evidence: “Daddy’s girl: Daughters, managerial decisions, and gender inequality” (Ronchi & Smith) The economists who conducted the study add: “Because these effects emerge rapidly and persist over time, we can rule out the need for prolonged exposure to gender issues or for personal incentives tied to improving conditions for their own daughters as prerequisites for managers to promote gender equality within their firms.”
- What have you learned about overcoming the pressure to please others? If you haven’t read Defy by Sunita Sah, it’s spot on
- Illustrations @researchdoodles @lizandmollie A little kindness goes a long way. Between yes and no is “I can’t do that, but I can offer this”—and people are grateful for it. Research: “Halfway to my request is not halfway to my heart: Underestimating appreciation for partial help” (Wang & Xie) “Undervaluing the positive impact of kindness starts early” (Echelbarger & Epley) “Exploring the effects of prosocial and self-kindness interventions on mental health outcomes” (Naclerio et al)
- This genius kid sent me on a roller coaster of emotion. Excited to announce my VIBE tour for this fall—hope some of you will join me along with @jennifer.garner @malcolmgladwell @markrober @officiallymcconaughey @mnight @brenebrown @danielpink Ann Patchett, Tim Harford, and more to come!
- When it comes to addressing cheating in schools, in-class essays and oral exams can only go so far, writes @adamgrant, a contributing Opinion writer and organizational psychologist at the @whartonschool. “Creating obstacles is never going to be enough. We need to get at the root of the problem by changing students’ underlying motivations,” he writes. “Across a series of studies, in a wide range of contexts, psychologists have found that as the stakes of a competitive challenge go up, cheating does, too,” he adds. “Some people are largely immune to this effect. They don’t follow a logic of consequence by calculating whether the benefits of cheating would outweigh the costs. They ask themselves: What’s the right thing for someone like me to do in a situation like this? They have strong moral identities.” Click the link in our bio to read about how schools can foster moral identities in students, from studying ethics to “inviting kids to think about how cheating is unfair to their friends.” | 🎨 @petey_royale #nytopinion
- Illustrations @researchdoodles @lizandmollie Across 4 studies, leisure guilt was more common when people were alone—and more likely among women, young adults, and people facing financial struggles. For the evidence, see the new paper “Leisure guilt” by Koo et al.
- 💚 this teacher encouraging parents to communicate “handle with care” when their kids could use extra support and understanding. Adults could benefit from it too! What if managers invited people to use this code when they’re facing personal challenges?

Sheryl and Adam share strong alignment on social impact, intellectual curiosity, and navigating public life, making for a potentially rich partnership. However, differences in spiritual practice, travel intensity, and approach to privacy may require careful negotiation. If both can create protected private space and mutual respect for their distinct rhythms, this could be a powerful match.

Ritesh AgarwalPRISM Founder & Group CEO | Revolutionizing Hospitality Industry76Ritesh and Adam share rarefied ground—both are reflective, publicly engaged thinkers who care about growth and impact. Their alignment on values like kindness, consistency, and purpose gives them strong foundation, and each could genuinely learn from the other's lens. However, their lifestyles demand constant performance and travel, which may starve the slow, vulnerable dialogue both claim to cherish. The match is intellectually rich and emotionally mature, but sustainability depends on carving out private space amid very public lives.

Garry TanPresident & CEO, Y Combinator72Both Garry and Adam are public intellectuals comfortable with visibility and frequent travel, and they share a passion for meaningful dialogue and making complex ideas accessible. Their main tension lies in Garry's optimistic, builder-oriented approach to technology versus Adam's more cautious, evidence-based skepticism about tech's societal effects. While they could productively challenge each other, the lifestyle demands of two high-profile careers and the philosophical differences around innovation's risks make this a promising but challenging pairing.

Tim FerrissAuthor of 5 #1 NYT/WSJ bestsellers, early-stage investor, Tim Ferriss Show podcast (1B+ downloads), founder of the Saisei Foundation72Tim and Adam share exceptional intellectual compatibility, with aligned values around deep thinking, evidence-based approaches, and personal growth. Their complementary traits—Tim's experimental lifestyle methods and Adam's research-based psychology insights—create potential for dynamic connection. However, their nearly identical constraints (demanding schedules, high-profile status, independence needs) pose significant practical challenges, and the risk of professional comparison over personal connection is real. While intellectually stimulating, the relationship would require exceptional effort to transcend professional admiration into genuine intimacy.

Their main friction lies in lifestyle: Adam's constant travel and public profile may clash with Brené's need for slow, private connection and downtime. However, both are seasoned public intellectuals who understand the weight of visibility, suggesting they could navigate scrutiny with mutual respect. The chemistry hinges on whether Adam's humor feels grounding or dismissive, and whether Brené can embrace lightness without feeling it undermines her depth.
